Diana, Maybe we could do a photography road trip?

If an adventure showed up at my door right now, I could take it and not even pack. And I get frustrated at times that I can’t because of the whole family thing. Then comes the guilt. Guess it’s finding the balance in there somewhere, right?

So I’ve decided that it’s time for the kids to experience some adventures as well. Not sure how that will look — but if I never book them, they’ll never happen.

Don’t pull out the whip and turn a birthday activity wish into something over which to feel guilty. Instead, make it come true. It’ll be worth it, in the moment and for years to come. Trust me on this. I’ll never regret my choices for how I celebrated 40, regardless of what those choices cost.

I’m turning 40 next month, too…I’m excited about it, and I too want to celebrate it in a special way. For me, that way is getting myself (sans kids & hub) away to NYC this summer to go to Blogher –A long weekend in NYC, *alone* (save for the couple of thousand BlogHers attending!)

Do NOT feel selfish, btw, for craving freedom from the everyday job, family, etc.–being the best parent and spouse you can be can’t happen unless you take care of YOU first. Sometimes that means being selfish–but it’s the kind of selfish that means you put on your own oxygen mask before helping the kids traveling with you on the plane.

Happy Birthday next month–two other fabulous women hitting 40 this year: Queen Latifah & Tina Fey. We are in very good company!
